One of our long standing touring groups made the most of the 'unofficial' long weekend and opted to utilise it for a trip to the Bay of Plenty.
With the mix of veterans along with some new additions to the group for 2023 the weekend began with the long haul up and over the desert to Rotorua to take on Springfield Golf Club
As we all know, Saturday was a wet day and this was no different in Roto-Vegas. After a hearty welcome, the boys donned the wet weathers and got stuck into it. The tight tree lined layout with the conditions as they were proved a challenge to all with only a small portion breaking the 30 stableford point mark, the days winner being newcomer Bruce White with 34.
Looking for sunshine, the group headed further north to setup camp at the beautiful Mount Maunganui ahead of Day Twos golf.
With the sun on their backs, the boys ventured to Mount Maunganui Golf Club eager to improve on the previous days scoring and the immaculate course didn't disappoint. The picturesque coastal course suited many, but also suited Bruce White who again who topped the leaderboard for a second day running with 39 points.
After a tally up the leading four were:
Bruce White 73 pts
Glenn Jongen 69 pts
Murray Hausman 68 pts
Dave Barlett 68 pts
The stage was set for the final day, still all to play for amongst the group which was to be decided at the central Omanu Golf Club.
Greeted with yet more sun albeit a strong coastline breeze, golf was underway at the pristine venue and the race was on for the 2023 title.
At the top of the order, our contenders capitulated a touch with a winding creek throughout the course proving the undoing of many... From seemingly nowhere our 2022 Champion Andrew Clarke took out Day Threes honours with a solid 36 points. Not quite enough to topple Bruce but the last day did bring about a change up in the leaderboard.
2023s Champion was Bruce White after 3 days of good golfing. Congratulations Whitey
